The Sims 3 Dating, Falling in Love and Getting Married Tips

Though it’s always fun to deck your mansion to the nines, making your characters fall in love and establishing relationships is definitely a highlight when playing games in the Sims series. In The Sims 3, relationships are even more realistic than it was in the past two games. Sims can have boyfriends or girlfriends, propose or get engaged, tie the knot, have children and even get divorced. That being said, what exactly is the secret that makes Sims relationships last?

Back to Basics

If you’re really serious about playing matchmaker then it is important to understand how relationships are established in The Sims 3. In this virtual game of life, connections are measured with the use of “relationship score” this is similar to many otome games where your interactions and frequency of contact with boys influences your relationships. This may increase or decrease depending on the type of interactions between the two. Aside from their current relationship status, factors that may affect the kinds of interactions available include the life state, age and whether or not the two come from the same family.

Relationships between Sims are not always romantic. They can simply be casual or friendly. If the two don’t get along, their interactions can even be hostile. By losing touch over a significant period of time, the relationship score between two characters may even return to a baseline of zero. This is surely useful when dealing with bitter rivals. However, if you wish for two Sims to fall in love, you’d best reinforce the relationship through constant interactions.

Prior to meeting, two unrelated Sims are considered as strangers. Engaging in their first social interaction takes the relationship up a notch and the two become acquaintances. If you allow them to continue interacting in a positive way, they eventually become friends. Once their relationship score hits 60, they become good friends. Reaching a score of 80 turns the two into best friends. Keep in mind that variety is the key to strengthening friendships. You wouldn’t want to bore the other Sim, do you? Using the same actions over and over again may have a negative impact on the relationship score.

Beyond the Friend Zone

In order to give Sims the Romantic Interest status, one must be able to perform romantic gestures successfully. Use the “Kiss” action or allow one to “Confess Attraction” to the other in order to start a romantic relationship. While the only prerequisite here is a positive relationship score, a better foundation makes for a more receptive, affectionate Sim date.

To label the relationship, so to speak, you must allow the two Sims to continue their romantic interactions until they find each other to be “extremely irresistible”. Once that happens, you can perform the “Propose Going Steady” action in order for the two to become boyfriend and girlfriend (or boyfriend and boyfriend, girlfriend and girlfriend). From there, the two can move on to becoming engaged using the “Propose Marriage” interaction and even plan a wedding. Keep in mind though that if a Sim does not accept the proposal, the relationship score could suffer. The progressive development of relationships in the Sims is what makes the game one of it’s kind. Unlike the many romantic love simulation games you can check out at that offer far less depth in progressing from friends to lover, the Sims gives you all the levels in between that you must navigate carefully and this gets you to truly consider whether the girl or boy your flirting with is truly the one you want to be with.

Cheating is a no-no

Just like in real life, cheating on the Sims 3 which is covered at is not advisable if you’re aiming for lasting relationships. If a Sim catches their partner in an affair with another gal or guy, the relationship score suffers drastically. Cheating may even turn the two into bitter enemies and divorce (or “Break Up”) is always a possibility.

Keep in mind that even children or other family members can get hurt by witnessing a Sim cheat, or even just flirt with, another Sim. As a result, they will have negative moodlets as well as a significant drop in the relationship score.

Traits Matter

Even if a Sim is real charming, it can be difficult to establish a connection if the apple of his eyes has traits that are not conducive to a romantic relationship. Traits are important factors in the game, and it is what separates Sims 3 from the typical avatar dating game like In such a scenario, “it’s not you, it’s me” truly applies. For instance, Sims that have the Commitment Issues attribute will not be as receptive to romantic gestures. Similarly, those with the Unflirty trait find it hard to handle romantic situations. In cases where romantic actions are rejected by another Sim, an “Awkward” status is applied for a short duration. If the other Sim persists in romantic advances, a “Creepy” or “Odd” status may be applied, resulting in a possible decrease in the relationship score.

It is not impossible to tie the knot with a Sim that has the Commitment Issues trait. It will take time to increase the romance score to a high enough level for the Sim to get married but with patience and careful planning, it will happen. On the other hand, those with the Insane trait are quite unpredictable as they give random reactions to proposals.

Though there are traits that make finding love difficult, there are also a few that make establishing relationships easy. Sims that have the Friendly, Flirty, Charismatic and, of course, Hopeless Romantics, are easier to impress. In general, those with these traits are less likely to reject affection and require a lower relationship score to marry
